NICOLE FIACCO GALLERY

The NICOLE FIACCO GALLERY is pleased to announce The Set Up, an exhibition featuring the work of seven artists known for their staged photography - constructing their own realities or questioning iconic cultural constructions that have become ‘reality’.  Exhibiting artists are Giovanni di Mola, Cynthia Greig, Linda B. Horn, Chad Kleitsch, Lothar Osterburg, Richard Selesnick and Nicholas Kahn and Laura Gail Tyler.  Photography is by nature documentary, though it is not incompatible with fiction.  The Set Up presents artists who document ideas and who challenge cultural and visual notions of ‘authenticity’.  The exhibition offers viewers different points of view on the concept of staged photography.

Giovanni di Mola (American b. 1968) studied photography at the School of Visual Art in New York. di Mola's photographs include compelling portraits and self portraits, using the familiar in unfamiliar ways, disorienting the viewer and playing with the notions of identity.  di Mola began shooting fashion photography in New York and his work has been published in Italian Vogue, Photography Quarterly, Mixer and GENRE magazines. di Mola has participated in many group exhibitions and in 1997 had a solo exhibition at Yossi Milo Gallery in New York.  Di Mola is represented by the Nicole Fiacco Gallery.

Cynthia Greig (American b. 1959) received her M.F.A. in 1995 from the University of Michigan School of Art + Design. Greig has exhibited her photography internationally. Recent solo exhibitions include Representations at San Fransico Camerawork and Centro Cultural Recoleta, Buenos Aires, Argentina.  Greig is concerned with the coexistence of contradictions and marking the moment when apparent realities collide. Greig’s photographs explore the exchange of influence between perception and experience, and the camera’s role in negotiating what is considered “real”. Using properties inherent in the camera’s lens and photographic file rather than digital manipulation, the artist creates images that investigate how information can infiltrate the consciousness, occupy memory and affect the understanding of the world that we live in.  Greig is represented by the Nicole Fiacco Gallery.

Linda B. Horn (American b. 1940) is a conceptual artist working primarily in photography and sculpture.  She received her M.F.A. from the Art Institute of Chicago and has exhibited her work extensively throughout the United States.

Linda Horn contemplates the relationship between the natural and the artificial. Specifically, the artist’s darkly comic imagery engages the viewer in a way that toys with perceptions of reality; presenting familiar subjects in ways that displace their common understanding and role.  Linda Horn’s work has been exhibited at museums including the Rockford Art Museum, Rockford, IL; Portland Institute for Contemporary Art, Portland, OR; Evanston Art Center, Evanston IL; Atlanta College of Art, Atlanta GA; and most recently, the Berkshire Museum in Pittsfield, MA. others. Linda Horn’s work was previously exhibited at Fassbender Gallery, Chicago, IL; Feature Gallery, Chicago, IL [now Feature, Inc., NY]; Art Cologne 1996, Cologne, Germany; and Joyce Goldstein Gallery, Chatham, NY.

Chad Kleitsch (American b. 1968) has 30 years of photographic experience. A graduate of Bard College, Kleitsch’s photographs have been in solo shows at the Ariel Meyerowitz Gallery in NYC; Carrie Haddad Gallery in Hudson, NY; and E3 Gallery in NYC. Group shows include those at the Art Institute of Chicago; Time Space Limited in Hudson, NY; Samuel Dorsky Museum in New Paltz, NY; Wendy Cooper Gallery in Madison, WI; Margaret Bodell Gallery in NYC; and Kanazwa College of Art, International Art Exhibition in Kanazwa, Japan. His work has been featured in Bystander: A History of Street Photography by Joel Meyerowitz and reviewed in The New York Times, The New Yorker, Time Out, Albany Times Union, and Fortune Magazine. Chad has lectured at Yale University and Sarah Lawrence College, and has taught at Bard College and La Guardia College.  Kleitsch will exhibit selections from the White Box Series, which captures the installation and staging of art exhibitions in institutional settings such as MOMA.  Chad Kleitsch is represented by Carrie Haddad Gallery, Hudson, NY.

Lothar Osterburg (German b. 1961) studied at the Hochschule für bildende Künste,( Art Academy ) in  Braunschweig, Germany.  Osterburg is known for his exquisite photogravures of small, sculpted models of windmills, lighthouses, and sailboats among others, staged in evocative settings.  Osterburg has exhibited his work extensively around the world, including at Art Basel with Achim Moeller from 2001-present.  A master printer for Crown Point Press from 1989-1996, Osterburg has also worked with artists including Judy Pfaff, Adam Fuss, John Baldessari and Pat Steir, among many others.  Osterburg’s work has been published or reviewed in publications such as the New York Times, Art on Paper Magazine, Artnet and The Art Newspaper.  The artist has been a Visiting Assistant Professor at Bard College since 1998 and an Adjunct Professor in Printmaking at Cooper Union.  Lothar Osterburg is represented by Achim Moeller Gallery, New York, NY

Richard Selesnick and Nicholas Kahn (British, both b. 1964) have been collaborating as Kahn/Selesnick since 1988 on a series of complex narrative photo-novellas and sculptural installations.  Their grand panoramic photographs have been exhibited internationally and in the U.S. at galleries including Carl Hammer Gallery, Chicago, IL, Yancy Richardson, NYC and Carrie Haddad Gallery, Hudson, NY.  Their work has been widely reviewed in publications including Artnews, Art in America, The L.A. Times, The New York Times, Harper’s, Aperture, Time Magazine, The Boston Globe,  The Art Newspaper and the International Herald Tribune, among many others.  Kahn and Selesnick are represented by Carrie Haddad Gallery, Hudson, NY.

Laura Gail Tyler (American b. 1976) received her B.A. in Sculpture and Photography from Bard College and her M.F.A. in photography from Yale University.  Tyler's provocative images begin with her interest in basic architectural structures such as the bridge, the tower and the house.  Tyler addresses some of the associations we have with these icons; photographing small scale sculptures, she creates tension between idealized structures and the impermanent materials from which they are constructed.  Tyler has exhibited her work at prestigious institutions such as the Society of Contemporary Photography in Kansas City, MO, the Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art in New Paltz, NY and The Houston Center for Photography, among others.  In 2005, Tyler was included in Radius: Emerging Artists, a juried exhibition by the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum and the Ridgefield Guild of Artists.  Tyler is a 2006 fellow in photography from the New York Foundation for the Arts and has received fellowships from the Woodstock Center for Photography and the Houston Center for Photography.  Tyler was recently selected for publication in Witness No. One: Stephen Shore.  Laura Gail Tyler is represented by the Nicole Fiacco Gallery.
